Nick and Toni's Penne Alla Vecchia Bettola

The Food Network has a relatively new show called the “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” where they pick a theme and the various personalities on the network go to the restaurant that is their favorite. I happened to be watching one day when Ina Garten picked a place for pasta and it looked very good. The recipe comes courtesy of the Nick and Toni’s Restaurant in East Hampton, NY and I’m surprised they were willing to furnish it. We decided to make it and sided with a Caesar salad. It’s $22 a plate ala carte at Nick and Toni’s plus $13 for a Caesar salad, so our four meals were $140 worth – it’s a little cheaper to eat at Almost Heaven South than in the Hamptons.

Cooking the sauce in the oven really concentrated the flavor, so I will try that again, and while it was good, it wasn’t the best pasta I ever ate - now there's may have been better mind you. The V. Sattui cabernet, however, was delicious - if you ever get a chance, there wine is definitely worth a try.

  2. I love the show as well, but it does feature some... interesting choices. Not what i would call the best, but to each their own...

  3. I always think that they don't give the exact recipe when they contribute, or else it doesn't translate for restaurant cooking to home cooking correctly. I noticed somebody left a comment about a difference in the seasonings from what was on tv - maybe it was that? Anyway, I'm a FN freak and I do love that show! It's fun to see what the "best thing" is, depending on the category of the day. They have really featured some yummy looking things!

  4. Larry, I'm sorry to hear it wasn't all you wanted it to be, but it sounds like you were passably happy with your in-home dinner. I have always doubted that restaurant chefs fully share the secrets of their recipes. I also suspect that food editors always step in and write the final version. I'm glad you enjoyed the wine.   5. A great looking dish and I am a watcher of that show as well. I find that even though restaurant food is good us home cooks make fine meals ourselves!
