Our Last 2022 RV Club Rally – Day 1½ - Miller industries & Porvino's

With only the Christmas Party remaining, this was the final rally for our Tennessee Travelers RV club and we were looking forward to making the trip to the Chattanooga, TN area to spend time with our friends.  We got the coach all packed and ready and got on the road at 2pm for the under two-hour ride to the Holiday Travel Park ofChattanooga which is actually located in Rossville, GA, about a quarter mile below the TN/GA state line.

This is our site and while they are adequately spaced, the roads are pretty tight for big rigs.

That first night, we met in the very nice clubroom for a salad potluck supper and get-caught-up gathering and we once again made Claudia’s Chicken Waldorf Salad, but I used grapes rather then raisins.  It was followed by Ice cream sundae’s.

On Wednesday morning, we saw a demo of a device that will allow a towed vehicle to be backed up and maneuvered as if it were a trailer without the normal jack knifing and it actually worked.  Details, including a video, can be found at www.backsteer.com.

It was developed over a nine-year period, by a man in Cookeville who told us that he hoped to have it on the market by year-end and it will likely cost about $1200/set.

One of our members has a son who works at Miller Industries and he arranged for a tour for us.  Located in Ooltewah, TN, Miller manufactures a variety of light- to heavy-duty wreckers, car carriers, and rotators under several brand names, including Century, Vulcan, Chevron, and Holmes.  If you watch “Highway To Hell” or “Heavy Rescue 401,” on The Weather Channel, you have seen lots of their products.  Regrettably, I wasn’t able to take the tour, but here are a few pics from our group.

That evening, we met at the nearby Provino’s Italian Restaurant for supper and they had us a table for 14.

I like that they serve the salad family style with rolls in a bowl of garlic butter.

While Bev and Pat said their meals were just okay, I loved my Seafood Trio described as “ Shrimp, Scallops and Clams, Sauteed with Herbs, with Marinara or Rosatella Sauce over Pasta” ($20.95).  After discovering that Rosatella Sauce is a flavorful sauce that contains tomato passata, heavy cream, white wine, and seasonings (like alfredo and marinara mixed together) so I had to try it.

After supper, it was off to the clubroom for more ice cream and the end of a good first day and a half.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Larry, Looks like a nice outing and close to home as well. Interesting that Miller Industries is based in Chattanooga, the home of the wrecker business...where tow trucks invented and were first built. Laurie and I have been to the Tow Truck Museum in Chattanooga. It isn't too big, it was well done and we thought that it was very interesting. As for your dinner, Seafood Trio with shrimp, scallops and clams, sautéed with herbs and Rosatella Sauce over Pasta, sign me up for that one! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
