Homemade Dogfood And Almost Bald

Our dogs are getting fussy about their normal food of a little chopped chicken mixed with kibble and I had seen a spot on TV espousing the benefits of homemade food over store bought kibble, so I made up a batch using this recipe.

Homemade Dog Food

4-5 chicken breasts, chunked

2 lb. frozen green beans (3 lbs. next time)

2 lb. carrots, 1” pieces

2 pieces thick cut bacon, small dice

2-3 cups cooked brown rice

Add the chicken, carrots, beans and bacon to a large pot, cover with water and cook until everything is tender.

Cook the rice per package directions.

Cool the chicken and veggies and run them through the food processor.

Add this mixture along with the cooled rice to a large bowl and mix well.

Freeze in plastic bags.

To serve, I mixed it 75-25 with Blue Wilderness dry food.

The Verdict:

The pups seemed to love it and I’m glad or I could have envisioned myself adding herbs & spices and eating it for a long time – I actually thought it tasted pretty good.  Next time I may use a different green vegetable and sub sweet potatoes for carrots.

I believe I've commented in the past that I go to the dermatologist every six months and get pre-cancers frozen on my face and head and now they have a treatment that catches them even before the doctor can see them.  It requires rubbing a light coat of two creams over my head top and forehead and to make it easier for them to get to my scalp, I had my hair cut really short this time - wow not much up there.

One thing I'm now sure of after seeing this - I have less hair on top than I realized but I am not a candidate for the shaved head look ðŸ˜Š

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. I used to make homemade dog food for years, very similar to this, but I used organic ground lamb. That's back when I had more gumption.

  2. Hi Larry, That homemade dog food sounds great and better yet, the dogs really liked it! Big advertisers of fresh dog food on TV these days are Fresh Pet and The Farmer's Dog. Very trendy and probably better for our favorite critters! Bald is beautiful...that's what I tell myself when I look in the mirror. No head shaving here either! Great that they have a way to get to those cancerous cells before they are more of a problem... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  3. I've always made Grace homemade treats but never homemade dog food. Hmmmm. I think she would LOVE it!
