Friday was supposed to be a day of bad weather with rain beginning
around 1pm so the girls decided to get out earlier than normal, visit the Egg
Harbor farmers market, then head up to shop in Fish Creek until the weather got
bad. I had a couple of repairs to make
so I hung around the coach with the dogs and fixed supper. Turned out the FM had only four stands (but
one with good maters) and the rain went around the very dry peninsula and the
girls spent several hours in Fish Creek.
Saturday began with this special Bev BLT & egg (it was awesome and here is a shot of the privately owned park model two sites from us.
Then, we wanted to avoid the big time tourist spots and not fight
the normal weekend crowds, so we made a driving/photo tour beginning in Egg
Harbor where the downtown area and marina can be seen in this shot from the
web.
The downtown area might be a block long and then there are
businesses and houses intermingled both north and south of town for a little
ways - population 201.
This is the marina with plenty of activity this final Saturday before the Labor Day weekend and official end of summer.
From there, we drove over to Bailey’s Harbor for a stop at Bailey’s
Harbor Fish Co. to pick up some frozen walleye to take home and smoked salmon
and trout to snack on. We didn’t realize
it from the samples we tried but when we tried the smoked fish back at the RV,
it was almost too salty to eat so we’ll need to make it into something rather
than eat it plain – I’m thinking smoked fish scramble.
From Bailey’s Harbor, we drove up the east side of the peninsula
where not much is going on except we did see three Door County Trolley’s
delivering guests and the wedding party to an outdoor wedding with very little
parking – pretty clever I thought – and we got several views of the lake.
After Thursday’s scenic trolley tour, we decided it would be fun to
do the wine tasting tour, not that we like wineries or anything, which we did on Sunday. We loaded up at the trolley station for a
10am departure and our drive, Henk (Dutch), told his first corny joke before
ever getting behind the wheel. I believe
there must be a school somewhere where tour guides go to learn their bad jokes
but he soon had everyone grinning and off we went.
The tour included three wineries, one cider tasting, and lunch at the half-way point at Galileo’s
Italian Food, which was okay but nothing special – I would have expected better
pasta with bolognese ($13 per their menu) from an Italian restaurant and I’m
not likely to return.
The first winery was the Peninsula Winery & Door County
Distillery which we had already visited so we didn’t buy anything but I got some
new pics. This owner knows he is in the
money-making business and in addition to the libations they provide gourmet
olive oils, fudge, and other tourist goodies.
Next was the Simon Creek Winery which is located off the beaten
path in a bucolic country setting. I
didn’t find any of their wines purchase worthy but the girls bought some of the
port, sherry and chocolate dessert wines.
After lunch we visited the Harbor Ridge Winery which I’d been
looking forward too after our neighbor said she liked the Riesling but I didn’t
care for it and I believe we walked out of the winery empty handed and went
next door to the cheese shop. They don’t
make cheese there but sell award winning artisan cheeses from across Wisconsin,
but since most were in the $20/lb range and my taster is not that discerning we
left there with nothing as well.
The last stop was at the White House Red Door for a tasting of
cider but what they carried was from the Island Orchard Cider that we had previously visited and
didn’t much care for, I escaped again with the credit card unscathed.
I think we all enjoyed our five hour day and Henk did an excellent
job of discussing our stops and some of the local area – At $65/ea I’d
recommend the tour.

Always fun to explore new areas and sound like you are enjoying them. Keep the trip going..
ReplyDeleteAvoiding crowds is one of my major goals in life. LOL We don't drink wine so no tours for us. But I do enjoy reading about what others think of the wines and tours. We have frozen walleye in our freezer too.
ReplyDeleteBev's sandwich looks tasty.
ReplyDeleteI noticed this was posted at 3:30 am. Did you stay up late or get up early? Time zones I guess. It's been hot and a little boring here in TN except for a visit to MS to meet with family.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice tour and little added to your charge card is always a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous of all your wonderful travels this looks like my kind of fun WINE!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a good day for you all... I thought of you yesterday. We were in Nashville visiting George's daughter. She took us to a little local restaurant/bar/grill near downtown Nashville --called "The Row"... George and I both had one of their special burgers called the NASH Burger. It had a big fried egg on top.... Very good burger!!!!
ReplyDeleteContinue enjoying your trip... We are headed west soon --but ours is only a 10 day one.
Hugs,
Betsy
You know that sandwich has me drooling! YUM! It looks like a fun area to explore.
