Let’s Head West Again – RV Trip Days 1- 3

After a 10 day delay due to a tow car issue, we finally got all loaded up and began our Western trip.  The house sitter is all settled in to look after things and we think we have everything we need for a successful trip.

We were planning to make a leisurely 15 day drive through WI, MN, & ND to arrive at our primary location in the South Dakota Black Hills but with reservations already made there and plans to meet up with another couple, we had to take the more direct route and make the trip in 5 days (four driving and one rest).

For our first day, we drove 375 miles from home to Cape Girardeau, IL where we stayed at Cape Camping & RV Park located a little northwest of downtown and near I-55.

We traveled I-40, I-24, US-60, US-51, IL-3, & IL-146 into Cape Girardeau.  None of the roads were bad but none were great either with all needing some work.  US-60 was the most narrow and curvy road but very manageable.

We found the campground to be just fine for an overnight stay and they had pull through sites long enough for us to keep the car hooked up.

On day two we drove 375 miles from Cape Girardeau to Platte City, MO (just north of Kansas City) following I-55, I-270, I-64, I-70, I-435, and I-29.  All of the roads were in decent shape and there was good-to-see new asphalt in many places.  As we were approaching KC the traffic was getting heavy and we took our planned I-435 loop around the town and what a pleasure it was – good road with little traffic.

We pulled into Basswood Resort around 3:30 pm, checked in and were escorted to our non-satellite friendly site, but fortunately we were able to move to here.

I’ve mentioned this before but my categories for places we stay are campgrounds, RV parks, and RV resorts and since this was just basic gravel sites without concrete pads or patios, I consider it a campground but it was good for an overnight stay.

We spent day three resting up, seeing a little of the area and eating supper at Maria’s MexicanRestaurant where I over indulged as usual at a Mexican place.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Glad to see you on the road again. I still much prefer 150 to 200 mile days or even less if possible. Have a good time.
