Turkey Salad

As you likely know, I’m a backyard BBQer and occasionally smoke a turkey as I did on my recent BBQ day. We ate most of what I kept as Turkey Paninis when my kids were here on Monday, and mostly what remained was smaller pieces. I’ve said this before, but my favorite use of turkey is as turkey salad and I especially like it from smoked bird.

Beverly usually makes it in the food processor and it ends up in small pieces, but this day, before heading off to town, she made it with diced ingredients. When lunch time rolled around, it had to be a turkey salad sandwich for me. I’ve shown recently how Bev goes the extra mile to make things better and I decided today I would move in that direction – my usual is cold turkey salad between two pieces of bread.

I added the turkey salad to the bread

Added a few slices of pickled jalapeno (I spotted them setting on the counter)

A little cheddar cheese and nuked for a minute to warm everything and melt the cheese some.

I added a little lettuce and enjoyed a pretty basic, but really tasty sandwich.

I believe I prefer the food processor version as the flavors are more evenly distributed and maybe a little more intense. I think this version would be good with some white grapes and nuts added to it.

As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang.

Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him,“Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Interstate 77.

Please be careful!”

“Heck,” said Herman, “It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!”

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

  1. That joke is one of my all time favorites. I love telling it and I'm so glad you've shared it with your readers. I hope it doesn't happen to us too.

Smoked turkey makes the very best sandwiches. I would have never thought to add the jalapenos. Nice touch Larry. The best part about turkey sandwiches is that you can change them up, like add nuts and grapes next time as you suggested.

  2. LOL.. great joke!!! And the sandwich... I could have gone for one of those yesterday at lunch... or today... or tomorrow!!

  3. Poor Herman.

Love this sandwich - simple is best. I think you are right that grapes and nuts would be a wonderful addition.

  4. I can't believe you have daffodils coming up! I did hear that we are all gonna get a shot of spring next week! Hopefully I can get out and do some stuff to get the lawn started before the next round of cold blows through.

You know that just happened on an interstate recently. It was an elder fella and he was flying down the interstate on the wrong side - some folks on the other (right) side were shooting it with their phone. Showed the full on collision and it was awful! I heard he survived but was critical. Hope that wasn't Herman.

That turkey sure looked good and I can only imagine how good a turkey salad that made. Come check out my recipe with pecans and grapes if you like - I call it "grown up" tea room chicken salad.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  5. Larry, I would have just left that lettuce off the sandwich but the jalapeno peppers are a great and tasty substitute for my usual Tabasco Sauce! Turkey salad or chicken salad...two of my favorites for lunch! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  6. I love your sandwich but your story stole the day. It helps not to lose one sense of humor. I'll be smiling fro the rest of the day. Have a great weekend. Blessings...Mary

  7. Funny joke.... That turkey salad sandwich looks fabulous, Larry... Makes me hungry --and looks better than this soup I'm eating... ha

Have a good day and enjoy the warmer weather.

  8. Smoked turkey salad sounds delicious!

That was one HYSTERICAL joke! I'm going to send it to my mom. She'll appreciate it.

  9. I've never made turkey salad with smoked bird - sounds delicious and fun to play with flavors. The sandwich looks really tasty.

  10. How timely is this???? I was digging around in the freezer and found a bag of turkey meat from Thanksgiving. I'll be making turkey salad this week. Great looking sandwich Larry. And the joke??? I nerviously chuckled...I'm not much younger than you.

  11. Still thinking about the canned chicken....ewwww. It reminded me of this video:

Great looking turkey sandwich and LMAO at the joke.
