On day four we drove from St. Cloud, MN to Rugby, ND to kill one of the birds with that one stone. I won’t go into the details but many years ago we ended up with a small piece of land near Rugby that we had never seen so since we were going all the way to Nebraska, we decided to go a little farther and see our little 68 acres - they farm by the square mile out in these parts.
Rugby’s claim to fame is that the geographical center of North America (Mexico, USA, and Canada) is located there. It was too cold and windy for us to pose with the marker.
We knew we had been driving in a strong wing coming over from Grand Forks (glad we weren't in the motorhome) but didn’t realize how strong until I opened the car door at the hotel and the wind grabbed the door and sprung the hinge to the point that the door wouldn’t close. Fortunately, the hotel staff knew to send me to the local body shop where the guy knew just what to do and had it fixed in five minutes. He charged me $10 but I gave him $40 for running us right in and saving us.
We were dressed for warm weather and the strong wind was
due to a cold front that dropped the daytime temps by 25F. We had brought jackets but I forgot my long
pants, so needless to say I was the only one out wearing shorts.
That night, we went to a local Rugby watering hole called 3rd Street Station, where we had a drink then a Bacon Cheese Burger for Bev and Garlic Parmesan Wings for me. We both enjoyed our meals and Bev especially liked the bacon on her burger - nothing really picture worthy.

Ten dollars for an emergency service call what a deal. What a group of friendly people. Sounds like a good place to live if not for the cold weather.

ReplyDeleteHi Larry, We're back from our road trip...and now I'm catching up on yours. We've been through Rugby...many, many years ago...and somehow we missed that marker at the center of North America. In South Dakota we did take photos at the marker near Belle Fourche that is the Geographical Center of the USA. Windy as all get out as well... Love those little local restaurants. They are something that we look for on our travels. Good fortune with your car repair! Reminds me of when our U-Haul rental broke down in a tiny town in southern Michigan years ago. A cotter pin solved the problem...another helpful mechanic who went out of his way to help us. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
