The third day we drove from Madison, WI to St Cloud, MN via I-90 & I-94 and, just as the previous day, we saw fields and fields of corn and soybeans to the horizon ready to be harvested.
Here’s a little crop info for you,
Here's how corn is used in the United States:
About 40% of corn is used for animal feed.
About 40-45% of corn is used to make ethanol biofuel.
About 20% of corn is used to make human food products, such as high fructose corn syrup, corn oil, cornmeal, tortilla chips, and cereals.
As for the soybeans:
About 70% is used for animal feed
About 70% is used for animal feed
About 15% is
used for human food
About 5% for
biodiesel
About 10 %
for a variety of uses.
That afternoon, we had a fiasco finding our hotel in St. Cloud as the address that Bev put into maps took us here to a field of soybeans.
So, we looked up the name of the hotel, went there, and were told they have no reservation for us but maybe it was for the other Americinn in town. We finally found that one and were told they had no reservation for us either but when I gave them my confirmation number, they said it had been cancelled and when I finally found my info, I discovered that I had made the reservation for Aug, rather than Sep, but fortunately they had rooms available. After being at one of their hotels and staying in another, Americinn will no longer be on our hotel list and perhaps none by Wyndam either.
For supper, we went to the Olde Brick House Pub (Irish American
restaurant) where Bev had a Caesar salad and battered French fries.
and I had the Corky Mussels ( I assume named for County Cork) which were a full pound of mussels in a very nice broth and served with ciabatta bread
The food was all delicious but the service was awful beginning with the server having to return because she forgot what we had ordered to drink. So, we waited quite a while for our food then server returned to advise that she forgot to put in our meal order, so we had to give it to her again and she promised a meal discount. Our bill for a cocktail, beer, salad, fries, and mussels was $12 so she comped us most of the meal.
By the time we left, the place was getting pretty empty.

Did the corn fields have internet access?
ReplyDeleteBoo for St. Cloud! But I did have to chuckle about the Google - Soy Bean event. We just harvested our Soy Beans, which is something that was never grown on my farm when I was growing up. Love all the photos of the fields. Reminds me of home.
