When getting into Sorrento (pop. 15000), we were told by the apartment hostess to come to the main square (Piazzo Tasso) and let Valeria know we were there, which we did. Per our request, she had arranged for someone to help with the luggage and valet parking for the car and it all went well. I took these shots of the busy square while awaiting pickup.
This is Francesco with his very clever luggage bike ready to go. Note that I took my water cup from home as did Beverly for her Diet Coke cup.
From the square we walked a little ways down Sorrento’s original main street to our apartment which is right in the midst of Sorrento's main area and unlike the previous hill towns, the main tourist area of Sorrento is flat then it's up the mountainside from there. This street often much more crowded. I'm confident that Siena and Florence also had streets like this but we didn't make it to either city.
Bev will be in hog heaven as the streets are lined with shops, including gelato right across the street - pic taken from the entrance to our courtyard. Another of her trip desires was to stay in town and just walk out the door to go shopping.
After my failure in Orvieto, I was back in hero status from Bev for this apartment which was on the main street (via San Cesareo) on one side and this is the entrance and the courtyard.
This is the new main street (Corso Italia) on the back side of the apartment with pics from our balcony.
This is Corso Italia at 6am the next morning after the street cleaners removed any trash with leaf blowers and a small vacuum truck.
Valeria gave us a list of her favorite restaurants but we just wanted to go someplace close and a little ways down the street Bar 2000 Ristorante fit the bill.
We started with a bottle of Prosecco and the mandatory bread with EVOO and vinegar of some sort plus a bottle of sparkling water. I'm not sure why they only seem to drink bottled water as all of the tap water we've had has been excellent.
Then we had a seafood salad appetizer to share that Wende and I enjoyed but it wasn't Bev's thing except for the mussels. I really liked the briny, but a little chewy, octopus.
The Bev ordered Pasta Carbonara which was good but a little
too salty.
I had the Seafood Pasta special.
And Wende ordered a three-course meal that began with Pasta and Clams.
I thought mine was good but not great and it was surely a tourist restaurant rather than where the locals eat.
Wende did great and managed to stay awake all day so she
could go to bed at night and wake up on Italian time.
My one planning regret is that we should have skipped Orvieto and stayed longer in Castellina or came sooner to Sorrento.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven

I like the looks of Sorenta. Charming. Seems like there's always one planning "regreat" on a trip like this. I'd say only one can be called successful.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, I love this area. Looks like a fun location with lots to do! That was a very ingenious luggage carrier on the bicycle ✅. Stay safe & ENJOY🤩

DeleteHi Larry, Sorrento looks like a lovely place to stay...not only attractive with plenty of shops and restaurants but also flat! All those stairs would be rough for me too...although I still go upstairs at our house 3 to 4 times a day...which would probably total one trip up the stair to your apartment in town! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteAppears that there were lots of tourists enjoying the colorful shops and streets.
ReplyDeleteI love learning all of these tips about your travel! It's too bad the food was touristy–it looked tasty!
