Sloppy Joe’s For Family Promise

I’ve mentioned this before but every so often we make meals for Family Promise which is a mission by several local churches to house, feed, and train homeless families.  The last time we did it, we made sloppy joe’s using Manwich and they were a big hit so we opted to make them again but homemade this time.  We chose the recipe below from The Chunky Chef  and both the recipe and some good shot’s like the one below can be found by clicking on the link.

Below is a tripled version of the original recipe.

Best Homemade Sloppy JoesAdapted from The Chunky Chef

Ingredients:
3 Tbsp butter
3 tsp olive oil
3 lb. ground beef
1 green bell pepper, minced
1½ large yellow onion, minced
2 T. garlic, minced
3 Tbsp tomato paste
2 cup ketchup
1 cup water
3 Tbsp brown sugar
3 tsp yellow mustard
1 T. chili powder
1½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
1½ tsp kosher salt
¾ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
¾ tsp black pepper
dash of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions:
1. Heat butter and oil in large skillet over medium heat.  Add beef and brown, breaking apart into crumbles as it cooks.  Transfer to colander to drain.
2. Add onion and bell pepper to the same skillet and cook until soft.  Add garlic and cook 30 seconds or so, until fragrant.
3. Add beef back to the skillet and add tomato paste.  Stir well.
4. Add ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, red pepper flakes (if using), and black pepper.  Stir well to combine.
5. Cook over MED heat for 10-15 minutes, until mixture has thickened to your liking.  Taste and adjust seasoning.

6. Remove from heat and serve over toasted buns.

We sided the sloppy joes with some of Bev's good slaw and potato chips for Family Promise and sent the whole pan full to them.

I tasted it and thought it was very good but I wish I’d had some Manwich for a taste test to see if homemade was worth the effort.

  2. Larry, Memories! It's been more than 50 years since I've had a sloppy joe. My mother used to make them back in the day...without the bell peppers. Salisbury steak was another traditional meal. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  5. I love a good Sloppy Joe - and happen to think Manwich is pretty darn good. However, I do like my church cookbook recipe better.

  6. My family loves sloppy joes, Larry. And yes, I'll admit to enjoying good old Manwich! I've only tried one from-scratch sloppy joe recipe (from Jamie Oliver) and it was sadly very, very bad. So I've got to try your recipe! ALso, I think it is great that you helped out with your local churches!
