Trip to Italy Day 25 – The Awesome Amalfi Coast - Out

Well, the big day has finally arrived – the major reason for coming to this area is to see the Amalfi Coast and we hired a private tour to do it so we could leave the driving to them and be able to take in the sites.  Our driver, Fabio, picked us up in Sorrento at 8:30am and the journey east began.

The Sorrentine peninsula is basically a mountain that rises from the water and with buildings and orchards clinging to it all over – check it out on Google Earth.  From Sorrento, we crossed the mountain as the Amalfi Coast is on the south side of the peninsula.  We rode the narrow, windy coast road to Cetara and what follows are some shots to give you an idea of the unbelievable ride - hard to believe humans settled here.  We went thru several small towns but I don’t recall which is which in the pics – Positano and Amalfi are the most famous and the traffic was much less once we passed Amalfi heading east.  Below are less than half of my pics but I'm not sure any amount could do it justice.  Where as most folks stop and explore the towns, we weren't up for the hillside walking.

This rock formation represents the Virgin Mary with a bouquet of flowers.

This villa was once owned by Sophia Loren according to Fabio.  Note width of two way road.

This is Maiori which has some flat area near the water.

The green covers on the lemon trees are to keep them warmer in the winter.  I wonder how they get the picked fruit back up the hill.

We got out in the cute little town of Cetara, stretched our legs and had a glass of white wine and a cappuccino for Wende.

Now it was time to head back west for more Amalfi in the next post.

Photos can be slightly enlarged by clicking on them and the blue words are links.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  4. Hi Larry, Thanks for the photos! It's about as close as we'll get to the Amalfi Coast. There is no way that I could walk through those hilly towns either...but they are pretty. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  5. I think you would like a youtube called Nicki and Carlo. They have a place in Tuscany and Positano and give you a good glimpse of life in both areas. Love your cooking info.
