During our
snow skiing days, many trips were made to Summitt County and we stayed in
Breckenridge several times, but we’d only seen it in the winter. Before leaving home on this trip, we decided a summertime
visit to one of our favorite wintertime places was a must, so we spent our last
Denver day there. It's a nice little town, but I prefer it in winter - town shots are from the street and from the bottom of Peak 8.
It has a nice little creek with a walking path along side that I didn't know existed.
After a little walking, I left Bev to her shopping and the dogs and I rode around to see some of the town I remembered and had never before seen. For our first trip out there, we stayed at Trappeur Villa and walked along and over the mostly frozen creek down to the slopes.

There were lots of these around the area and it has grown a lot in the last 15-20 years.
These are some shots of the ski mountain, which I'd never seen without snow - I know the Horseshoe Bowl in the 3rd shot is steep and thrilling with snow.
For the trip back, we did something I'd always wanted to do during our many trips to Summitt Country and that was to drive US-6 over Loveland Pass. We drove past Keystone then Arapaho Basin Ski Resorts - this is A-Basin.
We finally got to the pass which is definitely up there.
Looking way below, you can see route 6 and I-70
I'm now responding to your comments and hoping you will stop
back by - photos best if enlarged by clicking on them.
Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven
South.

How fun to visit in a different time of the year and how interesting that you like it better in the winter. Those are some steep mountains. wow.

Breckenridge looks like a nice little town in the summer but a Christmas wonderland with snow - especially the clean fresh stuff.
DeleteSuch a gorgeous place to live and/or visit! I've been to Breckenridge, but like you, only in the winter. It still looks lovely, but it sure is even better when there is snow!
ReplyDeleteWhile driving around, I thought I could live there especially if I still skied.
DeleteI learned to ski at Breckenridge. I've been at Loveland Pass in all four seasons - you are making me miss Colorado so much! It's not an easy life in the winter. I remember getting 2 feet of snow on Christmas Eve, 1982. Happy travels.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a CO visit is beginning to stir in you and they got a little snow.
DeleteBeautiful! I am from a ski resort in Idaho and these pictures really reminded me of home! Great photos Larry.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam - I developed a passion for skiing in mid life and can only imagine growing up at a resort.
DeleteLarry, It is a pretty area...but Laurie and I much prefer it in the summer. If we never saw snow and ice again, it would be ok with us! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteI know where you're coming from.
DeleteI'm a little sad to say that I've never seen the ski towns in winter from the slopes. Yes, after 30 years of living in CO I've never once strapped skis to these feet. I do want to try tubing, however. that looks like a lot of fun :) Great photos Larry!
ReplyDeleteTubing has opened up the ski hills to virtually everyone - I would enjoy it myself.
DeleteI first traveled over Loveland Pass in 1975, in a pickup truck with a camper on it with my Granny. She was a feisty old bugger! The views are awe-inspiring. But what I remember most about that trip was that she'd white-knuckle it across a bridge, staring intently at the license plate of the car in front of her, because bridges scared the tarnation out of her, but driving over those mountains didn't phase her one itty bitty bit. Glad you got to take that ride.
ReplyDeleteGreat story Marjie - was your family from the area.
DeleteI really like the Loveland Pass drive. It seems that everyone I come in contact with does appreciate our state and it's beauty. I'm sure we have our population of folks that don't. And a day doesn't go by that I don't exclaim "Look at those mountains" (when we don't have smoke) :) Highlands Ranch has some of the best views in the city. I think I have to admit that I've never been to Breckenridge. When I skied it was Vail, Keystone, A-basin, Copper Mountain, Winter Park. These photos don't look familiar at all. Again, thanks for sharing the photos. I enjoy looking at them.
ReplyDeleteI sure appreciate your state and it's beauty - I could easily live there if I didn't already live at Almost Heaven South.
DeleteI enjoyed your photos of Breckenridge in summer. We've only been to Colorado in the summer -- I would enjoy seeing what it looks like in the winter.
ReplyDeleteGeorge - I'd send you some but mine are pre digital camera and stored who-knows-where :-).
DeleteMy first time there, they had gotten 9" of fresh snow and it was beautiful.
Having just been there near the end of August we didn't see any of the Aspen color that you saw and everything was still green and flowers were abundant. We loved our taste of the mountains in summer! What a great trip you've shared.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan - This is my first time to see the aspens in fall color.
DeleteAnother fun trip! I had to chuckle at the current header pic of Bev with the dogs. If the hubby and I had an RV, that'd be me!!
ReplyDeleteBev sure has a full time job wrangling the pups and being the navigator.
DeleteColorado is a beautiful state anytime of year. I am loving that you, Bev and teh dogs are out there enjoying adventures from the RV. What a great way to explore and discover.
ReplyDeleteVelva
Thanks for checking out our trip Velva - it is a good way to discover America.
DeleteI've never been at 11,000 unless I was in a plane! Very impressive views all around. I've really been enjoying this trip of yours.
