Feeding The Calf

We are blessed to have great neighbors and one of the things we do for one another is help with the animals during out-of-town-trips. For them it’s always looking after our dogs, but for us, it can mean dogs plus this little guy - he's just a few weeks old.

When he was born, he was not claimed by his mom and almost died before he was discovered and a feeding regimen started by the humans – I believe neighbor Pat gets a kick out of feeding him and petting on him while she does. He’s a rare version of Belted Galloway, which are usually black with a white belt. I’d never thought about cow’s eyelashes, but his are about an inch long and curve down rather than up. He gets fed every 12 hours, and even though Bev volunteered, I ended up with the job at 8am and 8pm. I wanted to get a shot of him so Bev gave him a half bottle one afternoon. He sure is a hungry little feller and drains that 2 quart bottle in five minutes.

I’d posted a lot of sunset shots from Florida, so here are a few shots of sunrise over the Smokies, that I took from the neighbors hill just after feeding the calf one morning. It was prettier the morning before, but of course, I didn’t have the camera.

Nothing says the end of the dock season like the low sun shimmering on the water at 1:30 in the afternoon, the leaves collecting on the water, and the lowering of the lake – about 12” here.

But it was another beautiful fall day here at Almost Heaven South.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

  1. Bless his little heart! I have a client that raises this breed of cattle. I call them Oreo Cookie Cows. Beautiful...and I mean beautiful photos Larry. I love fall.

  2. What a cute little guy. I'm loving the angle of the sun this time of year. Our lake is lowered every 3 years so people can work on their seawalls.

  3. Darn. When I sit for my neighbors all I get to take care of are two cats.

  4. What a cute calf!!!

I love the sunrise photos... beautiful.

  5. He's a cute little bugger Larry. :)
    Love your area..simply beautiful!!

  6. Baby animals are so cute, and your little guy proves that!

  7. Cloudy and drizzly here on the plateau today--but not much rain... Nashville has gotten quite a bit of rain.

Cute little calf... Glad they saved this one...

Great Smokies pictures --and water pictures also.

  8. Wonderful photos, Larry! I love the light in the fall. It's beautiful and perfect for photos, too!

  9. My favorite thing about those belted cows your neighbor has is how they painted their cattle crossing sign to match.

I appreciate and enjoy your comments
