Trip to Italy Day 16 & 17 - A Day In Castellina Then Goodbye

Since Rhett & Beth joined us after cruising across the Atlantic and spending time in France and England they were ready for an easy day before flying home so they just kicked around in Castellina for the day – they had been gone for 24 Days.  We made reservations for them at the Squarcialupi Taverne (Castellina’s best restaurant) while Beverly continued to convalesce and I stayed with her.  Unfortunately, our dream trip has turned into the trip from hell for her with a chest cold and a sprained ankle and she’s talking about wanting to just go home.

They ate on the taverne veranda overlooking the countryside - the black rooster on the bottle indicates good wine.

After eating, they were invited to the basement for a tour of the Squarcialupi wine cellars.

Later, they walked around town and took a few pics.

The next day (17), we drove them to Florence so Rhett and Beth could catch the train to the Rome Airport and their flight home the following day and Bev felt well enough to go along – good sign. The Waze App route let us see a lot of the real, non-tourist Florence getting to and from the train station but we didn’t get any pics – driving in Italy’s cities requires the undivided attention of at least the two front seat people in the car.  It seems that signs, lines on streets, etc. are just suggestions and motorcycles go wherever they want and bikes must be looked out for as well.

In the 17 days that we have been here, the grape vines have put out a lot and are now vining rather than just showing initial leaves and we’ve seen folks out working them. They are neatly pruned.

You may ask why do they run the vines up and down hills vs. on a contour – it’s too steep for the tractors to work side hill but they can do just fine going up and down.

You know those Mediterranean herbs that we grow at home, this is what a rosemary looks like here at the farmhouse growing as a normal shrub.

Photos can be slightly enlarged by clicking on them and the blue words are links.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.
