Trip to Italy Day 12 & 13 - So Long Siena and Kathy & Keith and Hello Montepulciano Wine Tasting

After spending most of the day in Siena and having lunch, Kathy and Keith hopped a bus for the Rome airport and Beverly, Rhett, and Beth came to the farmhouse.  With Bev and I still ailing, Beth and Rhett went into Castellina for supper at the I Grani di Squarchialupi (The Grains Of Squarchialupi) – a fresh pasta restaurant.  Their menu has the usual courses: Appetizers, pasta, main course with side dishes, and dessert and unless you are really hungry it's best to just share each course.

Then on Friday (day 13) Bev and I still weren’t ready to go out in public so Rhett and Beth went to the wine tasting with lunch in Montepulciano which is another of Tuscany’s wine areas and noted for their Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Noble Wine of Montepulciano).  The winery that I selected was Terra Antica and it was about an hour and 20-minute drive from Castellina (or probably less than an hour for the Italian drivers).  The Montepulciano area makes wine primarily from both the Sangiovese grape alone and with others as blending grapes, so some of them were Super Tuscans (made with international grapes grown in Tuscany).

The winery hosts said that since Montepulciano was out a ways from the Florence/Siena corridor, that they didn’t get many American visitors.

Kathy called mid-morning to advise that their flight home had been delayed then early afternoon to advise cancellation and they weren’t sure what was next – they did get home the next day.

While I had stumbled on it a few times, Bev tripped and fell on the LR rug in the apartment and hurt her ankle, to go along with her cold – the dream trip is turning negative.

Photos can be slightly enlarged by clicking on them and the blue words are links.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. No!! I am so sorry you guys aren't feeling better and poor Bev. Hope it's not serious. Rhett and Beth are having a good time but I'm sure they wish they were with you.

  4. Larry, Enough already! This is your dream trip and health afflictions are taking over. HEAL! We hope that Bev's ankle isn't really serious. FYI, we had a noisy 4.1 strength earthquake here this morning. It was centered about 16 miles SE of Greenback. Take Care and at least enjoy the view and your surroundings. Dave and Laurie

  5. Oh, Bev! Darn rug!!! Since I've read the posts from newest to oldest, I know her ankle is on the mend and she's feeling a little better. It's fun to read the restaurant menu, and even though I have no clue what most of it says, I bet it was delicious! The wine tasting day looks like it was pretty wonderful.
