On
Wednesday we secured the coach and made our one-day-early departure from Lazy
Days KOA in Tucson. While we didn’t use
the amenities or participate in the activities I still really enjoyed the campground
and would definitely stay there again.
It is on the SE side of town making it somewhat away from the majority
of town with restaurants, etc. Our trip
north to Camp Verde took us up I-10, then I-17 around Phoenix and on to our
destination. At around noon, we breezed
right through Phoenix and other than a few rough patches, found the roads to be
in pretty good condition.
We
pulled into Distant Drums RV Resort mid afternoon, got parked and I went
comatose as I now had a head cold to go along with my other ailments. I’ll talk more about the campground later but
when we got up Thursday morning, this is what we found.

Sure
made our decision to come here a day early look brilliant. The coach has been in the snow before but
never with us camped inside.
And by
now Beverly was ailing and spent the day in bed while I made the 90 minute drive
back to Phoenix to get Cindy at the airport and would you believe she showed up with
a stomach issue. Fortunately, the next
couple of days are bad weather so perhaps we can all just lay around and
recover. Once we got thru the 5pm
Phoenix traffic, the drive back from the airport was beautiful as the high
desert was snow covered and easy to see in the fading light plus the road was
in good condition with very little traffic – likely due to I-17 being closed 10
miles past our exit due to heavy snow. I-17’s
end point in Flagstaff set a new single day record for snow accumulation at
31.6” with more to come on Friday – we may have to delay our trip up to the
Grand Canyon for a few days.
On
Friday, everyone was still ailing but I was significantly improved so I made an
early trip into Camp Verde for stops at Walgreen's for drugs and McDonald's for
breakfast. After some more laying around
the coach time, we decided we needed another day before venturing out in the
car. With snow and cold temperatures, I
decided that I had completely blown it on planning the trip out here but then on the
news they reported that the 47F highs were 25F below the average of 72F, so I felt a little better.
On
Saturday, the snow was pretty much gone from the valley, but the mountains
still looked beautiful from the campground.

Larry, The weather has been weird everywhere! Such is life I guess... The flooding here is past and we may get a little snow this coming week. A lot colder too! It's in the 60's today. All the blooming flowers and trees are in for a rude surprise! Good luck with your Grand Canyon visit. The weather forecast is promising if a little chilly. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

ReplyDeleteI thought you had been rather quiet lately. My gosh, so sorry to hear everyone has a bug. I saw some absolutely stunning snow photos of the cactus/dessert around Tucson. Lucky for you being there to see such a rarity. Get better soon! Sounds like Pat is the only healthy one?
