Southwestern RV Trip – Days 46-47, Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, Chapel

Finally, on Sunday we all felt well enough to venture outside the coach so we went for a drive to get a feel for things.  We began with the 35 minute drive up to Sedona to find they had a lot more snow and plenty of people on a pretty afternoon.  These are shots between Oak Creek and Sedona showing the famous red rocks.

Bev and I were shocked at the changes since we were there about 15 years ago – giant amount of growth and I don’t believe Oak Creek even existed back then.  The Sedona area has definitely been discovered.  We also checked out a campground in Sedona that I had previously considered and decided we liked where we are much better.

From Sedona we drove over to Cottonwood then up to the copper mining town of Jerome which clings to a mountainside about 2000' above the valley floor.

I suspect return trips will be made to these two towns.

Thanks to the drive-by on Sunday, the girls decided to return to Oak Creek for shopping and to visit The Chapel Of The Holy Cross and I opted for a much needed alone-day – well the dogs and me.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic chapel built into the buttes of Sedona, Arizona, and is run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.  The chapel was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church.  Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K.  It took 18 months to build at a cost of $300,000 and it was completed in 1956.  Pics from Cindy.

While they were gone, I made a Hash Brown Casserole to have for a few quick breakfast meals:

Ingredients:
30 oz. frozen hash browns
16 oz. breakfast sausage
3 pcs bacon, chopped
5 green onions, chopped
½ large bell pepper, diced
8 oz. sharp cheddar cheese -shredded
12 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 tsp salt
½ tsp garlic powder.
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
cooking spray

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Brown and crumble the sausage in a skillet, add the onions and peppers and cook until softened – drain the grease and cool.
3. Add the frozen potatoes, sausage mixture, and cheese to a large bowl. Toss to combine.
4. In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper then mix into the potatoes.
5. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray.Pat everything down with the back of a wooden spoon.
6. Bake for one hour, uncovered. The center should be set and the edges should be golden brown.

It made for a tasty and easy breakfast for a few days.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  3. Sedona is a zoo of people even with good weather and then everybody from the valley drives up to see the snow. Jerome has some great little dive restaurants. Glad you're all feeling better.

  6. Larry, Brings back a lot of memories! It's been many years since we've been to Sedona or Jerome. Never really cared much for Sedona...too many tourists and stores...but Oak Creek Canyon and the red rocks were always beautiful. Jerome was really quiet when we visited it but it has become somewhat of a hot spot since then. Nice photos with snow, something that we have never seen in Arizona. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
