My New Cooker

Over the years, I’ve had several smokers with the last one being a Masterbuilt electric smoker which I really like for many things.  However, it does not work as well for big meats with long cook times.  Oh, the Masterbuilt smokes fine but it doesn’t matchup with my lifestyle as it requires additions of wood chips every hour and for a 12 hour brisket, it must be started at 5am for supper that day.  My previous Stumps gravity feed charcoal smoker worked well for the big meats as I could just put it on and go to bed for a brisket that was ready the next morning.  All of my smokers are shown in this post.

During our recent trip to visit Kathy, her fiancée cooked a brisket on his Treager pellet smoker and it worked beautifully and since I want to smoke more meat, I decided that a pellet smoker was what I needed.  So, as usual, I did a lot of online research and discovered that a Rectec Pellet Smoker was the brand I wanted and that the Flagship 1100 was the model I needed size-wise.  So, I ordered it from Amazon, of course, and as it turned out it was delivered while son, Rhett, was visiting so he assembled it one morning while I went off for my annual physical.  Here it is after its initial 400F burn off to remove any manufacturing oil, etc. and it seemed to work flawlessly.

For a bonus, it connects to blue tooth so I can monitor the pit and two meat temperature probes from my phone.

I’ve decided for the initial cook, I will BBQ a slab of ribs which only take about 6 hours and I’ll be able to keep an eye on things during the day then I’ll cook the brisket that I have in the freezer but it will need to wait until I get back from a week in Florida while Cindy looks after the home front.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Hi Larry, Wow! Yet another smoker... Looks pretty fancy and the Bluetooth connection is mind boggling. What doesn't Bluetooth connect to?! I'm sticking with my dumb emergency only flip phone. My Weber gas grill is still functioning too. You do a great job smoking meats...that's for sure. I'm just too lazy to do it...but I do enjoy quality smoked ribs and brisket. Enjoy Florida! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
