RV Trip To Georgetown, KY, TTer’s Rally Day 1

We are back on the road to attend a rally with our Tennessee Travelers RV group and the destination for this trip is Georgetown, KY which is about 15 miles north of Lexington.  Planned events for the rally include a tour of the nearby Toyota assembly plant, and visits to The Ark Encounter, the Kentucky Horse Park, and the Buffalo Trace Distillery as well as meals at several restaurants.

We rolled into Whispering Hills RV Park a few miles north of downtown Georgetown about 3:15pm and got set up in the 90+F temps.

We have  back-in site #14 that was barely long enough to fit the coach and it had too much slope to the rear to get level without the back wheels being off of the ground – a no-no as it means no parking brakes – so I manually leveled and we just stayed a little sloped rearward.

Our first evening event was a hamburger cookout at the pavilion but I forgot to snap some photos.  It was a nice venue and the food was all good – we took our ranch beans and got several recipe requests.  They are super easy to make and very tasty.

RANCH BEANS – Makes about 15 cups
1 lb.                 Hamburger
1/2 lb.            Bacon, diced
1/2 cup.          Onion, diced
1 med             Green pepper
28 oz can       “Bush’s” baked beans
16 oz can       Red beans
16 oz can       “Glory” butter beans, southern style seasoned
16 oz can       Black beans, drained and liquid replaced with water
10 oz can       Rotel
1/2 cup           Catsup
1/8 cup           Brown Sugar (packed)
2 Tbsp.           Vinegar
1 Tbsp.           Mustard
1 tsp.               Salt
1 ½ tsp           Chili powder

In a skillet, brown hamburger, bacon, pepper and onion together, then drain fat. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker, mix well, and cook on low for 2 1/2 hours or to a simmer, stirring a few times.

Note:  It can also be made on the stove top but it will need more frequent stirring.  Since everything is cooked, it only needs to be heated through and longer cooking will degrade rather than improve the flavor.

After that, we just sat around and caught up with one another - fortunately there was a nice breeze in the pavilion.

It was a successful first day for the rally.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Larry, that's a nice area of Kentucky to visit. We've been to the Horse Park and of course, Laurie loved it! As an engineer, you ought to enjoy the Toyota Plant tour but I don't know what to say about The Ark Encounter. I'm not a creationist so I might struggle a bit with it... I'll be interesting in hearing your review! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
