RV Travel – Toqua Campground Rally – Part 3

On Wednesday, we drove down to Calhoun’s At The Marina for their buffet lunch followed by the clubs annual business meeting.  I’ve found this restaurant to be hit-and-miss over the years but I believe their buffet is always very good.  Here are a couple of shots from the web of the back and the front and our group arriving.

After our meeting we headed up to the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum (near the campground) for an interesting tour dedicated to the man who created the Cherokee written language.  We’ve lived in the area for 25 years, driven past it often, but this was our first visit to the museum.  

The museum manager took the time to explain some things to us that were very interesting.

There were also several things to see outside but it was just too darned hot so we'll plan to go back later.

That evening we just hung around at one of the coaches and gabbed, mostly about our ailments as us old folks are likely to do.

On Thursday, most of the group went back to Donna’s Old Town Cafe for breakfast but Bev and I headed down to the Englewood Mennonite Farmers Market to pick up new potatoes and fresh picked corn for that evenings planned low country boil. 

Unfortunately some storms moved through the area so we had to punt on the pontoon boat ride up river but more fortunately they provided some much needed rain for our dry land - a good trade I would say.

Bev and I spent the afternoon getting ready for the meal then we used two large turkey fryer pots to cook up a big batch of Low Country Boil for 29 in the Toqua Campground pavillion.  For the meal, we cooked 12# of deveined but shell on shrimp, 9# of small new potatoes, 4# of smoked sausage, and 30 ears of corn along with one cup of Zatarain's Pro Boil in each pot and enough water to cover the ingredients (we could have gone with 3# of sausage for this group).

We used to normal procedure of covering the tables with paper then dumping the food directly on the tables. Unfortunately I got too busy cooking and serving to take any shots but here are a couple from the web that looked almost identical for ours, except we used white butcher paper.

The meal turned out well and the diners seemed very pleased, especially the ones who had never had low country boil - we had very few leftovers.  For dessert, we had chocolate cake and homemade vanilla ice cream provided by the Lafon’s and some cold watermelon from the Lusk's. 

After the meal we had an interesting presentation by a man who is very knowledgeable of the local area history, especially the Cherokee who had thrived in the Blue Ridge Mountains for centuries.

In spite of missing the boat ride, it was still a fun day, then Friday we packed up, said our good-byes, and made the 13 minute drive home – well maybe a few minutes longer in the coach - I could get used to these short drives to a rally.
