It’s Asparagus Time Again

And when it is, we eat it every day or two until we’ve had enough, then we start giving some of it away.  It’s also Spring and thunderstorm time and when one rolled thru about 3:30pm, it knocked out the power for 3 hours leaving me with no TV, computer, or outside work to do (too wet), so I went out on the porch swing with my camera book to see if I could move past the automatic functions.

While I was playing around I managed to get the hunting party of what I assume were seven Red-tailed Hawks against the storm clouds – I don’t have a long zoom.

Supper was grilled salmon, asparagus, and pineapple – I grilled the pork loin as it just needed to be cooked, but we could have had a poor man’s surf & turf had we been hungrier.

For breakfast the next morning, I sautéed a few asparagus spears and lightly nuked a piece of the pork to go with my eggs and English muffin.  I added some garlic Tabasco to the pork and grated parmesan on the asparagus.  I put the plate under the best light in the kitchen and took several shots with various manual camera settings – this was the best of the bunch.

Not great, but better than my normal washed out flash pictures - maybe there's hope for me yet..

  1. I would love grow enough asparagus to give some away, but I know that's never going to happen. Too old and no green thumb being the two best reasons and no garden either. Oh well.

    Love sitting on a porch during a thunderstorm. Reminds me of being a kid.

  2. Birds: Red-tailed hawk is our most common hawk, but strange to see that many together. I can't tell for sure in the photo, but they could be Turkey Vultures. The dihedral looks good. You also might have migrating Broad-winged Hawks right now.
    Food: I'm loving that pineapple on the salmon. That for sure will be what's next on my grill. Wish we lived close so I could be the recipient of some of that asparagus.

  3. Asparagus.. I must admit I do not like it. BUT, I have been challenged to try it again and in a different way (grilling for starters) - so I'm going to give it a shot.. who knows, maybe my tastes have changed!
    Both the dinner and breakfast look wonderful.. even the asparagus!! :)

  5. Love asparagus. Wish we could grow them in Florida. As for photography, and I am simply an amateur, I have found it best to turn off the flash and use natural light, near a window instead of lights in the house. If you have a macro on your camera, that is fun to play with also.

  7. I do love asparagus. But after seeing how hard it was for my grandmother to grow (circa 1972, admittedly) in these northern climes, I'm terrified of the prospect of trying it.

    I was wondering if you had ever made your own sausage? I thought you had but I can't locate it here on your site. I have a big pork shoulder wanting to be made up. I guess I can grind it, add seasonings and fry it up or form into patties. Just wanted to know your take on sausage making.

  9. As much as I love asparagus, it got to be a little overwhelming last year while you guys were away. I believe I just gave up at some point. Too much for the two of you is WAY TOO MUCH for just me! Next time, I may bring the surplus to the office. But there's a marked difference between "fresh from the garden" asparagus and "fresh from the produce section at the supermarket" asparagus. The salmon and pork chops look delicious! Next time I watch the place for you guys, I'm going to have to do a better job of fridge/freezer clean-out. You have too much good food frittered away in the backs of your cold storage units!

    I hope you're enjoying the beautiful weather! I noticed azaleas today which I hadn't really noticed in the past few days. I love this time of year. Groups of plants just explode into bloom overnight!

  10. This sounds delicious. It's always a guessing game with food photos. I've pretty much given up on anything but natural light. I typically just stick the plate under my kitchen window and cross my fingers. ;) Your photo turned out great!

  11. Breaking out the manual controls, all right! ;)

    We have a family of red tails that have nested next to our house for the past 4 or 5 years. We always enjoy watching them hunt, battle the crows, and especially like hearing the young ones as their cries develop.
