New Orleans Trip – Almost Over

Bet you’re tired of N.O. by now. On our next to last day we got a late start, skipped breakfast and headed to the Central Grocery for a Muffuletta – the inventor of this sandwich. We originally bought a whole one and ate half for lunch, with the other half in reserve. But after discovering they’re better with age, we bought another one for the trip home – certainly better than the fast food places. It really is a grocery store selling meats, cheeses, sauces and picked everything. We brought home a jar of their olive salad to see if we can make one we like as good or better.

Bev had to go back the French Market to pick up a couple of things she’d seen the day before (no surprise to me) and we picked up some beignets from Café Du Mond for dessert and snacking. They were good, but care must be exercised when eating one or powdered sugar will quickly be all over ones black shorts. While the weather prediction was for partly cloudy skies, before we left the Quarter, we were in a cloud burst – don’t think I’ve ever seen it rain any harder. I couldn’t see to drive, even at 10 mph, and I had to pull over as did the cop car beside me. We we’re planning some other things but just went back to the condo and took a nap instead – at least Bev did while I blogged.

One of the DDD places near our condo is Joey K’s and thanks to my friend David’s remarking he had watched the video’s for the places we’d been so far, I figured I must be able to do it as well. Bev said she only wanted to go if it was homemade, so we both watched the video and decided it was a go. Since we ate our muffuletta about 11:30, we were ready for an early dinner and headed out around 5pm.

Like most big cities, neighborhoods have the local grocer, drug store, restaurant, etc. and so it is with Joey K’s - on the corner and surrounded by homes and according to our server the vast majority of their business is the local residents – the place was packed by the time we left.

Bev had the Shrimp Magazine (named for the street the place is on) and I had the Trout Tchoupitoulas, which I couldn’t come close to pronouncing. The shrimp dish was the one featured on DDD along with their brisket. Both of our meals were very good, but I liked the shrimp a little better. Our only regret is we didn’t have room for their onion rings as they were homemade and looked outstanding as they were served to tables around us – the waiter confirmed they were very good.

After dinner it was back to the room for a glass of chocolate wine and a little TV – definitely old farts behavior. This wine is addictive and reminds me a little of Baileys only not as strong and much less expensive – may take back a few bottles.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

Larry

  6. You definitely hit all of the good spots. I wouldn't have been able to leave town without having a Muffuletta either. I wonder if they are as good as I remember.

  8. LA - I can tell Nola is high or your vacation spot list - just get in the car and head southeast - tell your new boss you'll twice as effective after a fix.

  9. Vickie - glad you're enjoying the trip - I'm a sandwich fan, a salami and cheese fan and an olive fan, so a muffuletta is right in my wheelhouse.

  10. Pam and Pam - The chocolate wine is addictive and your lucky to have a muffuletta source. I believe authentic means ham, salami, cheese and olive salad on a round loaf of chewy bread - with the last two being the distinguishing characteristics.

  11. Sam - I thought mine were outstanding and I can't imagine an icon would change much.

  12. Big Dude, Joey K's is indeed on my short list of foodie stops when we do our New Orleans/DDD tour! As for Chocolate Wine...much to my surprise, it is a real winner. It's way too easy to drink...like chocolate milk with a bite! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
