Peanut Butter Sandwich My Way

I've had this is the que for awhile, so decided to procedd with it.

For me two foods that are very flexible and can be matched up with lots of other things are eggs (bet that surprises you) and peanut butter. Like many kids, I ate my share of peanut butter sandwiches growing up and I still like them. I’m not a big dessert eater but on occasion when I want a sweet and we have none, I’ll just get the jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and a spoon – get the picture? There are a wide variety of peanut butter types and brands available, natural, low-fat, creamy, crunchy, and all are popular with someone. Mom tried a huge variety as I was growing up - this one type had to be stirred each time to reincorporate the oil and it had the consistency of fine sand – I didn’t care for it. After lots of trials over the years, I’ve settled on Jif Extra Crunchy as the top of the heap for me. This may shorten my life, but I like to eat the things I consider to be the best believing a shorter happy life is better than a longer miserable one :).

I like to do these “when I was a kid” posts. We ate a variety of sandwiches with peanut butter: just butter, or banana, or marshmallow cream, or jelly, or some combo of these. But my favorite was and still is the concoction shown below. Thanks right, it’s peanut butter, Hellmann’s real mayo and sliced dill pickle (usually Clausen, but we had Vlasic on hand) and I consider it to be a true epicurean delight.





I’ve never described it to anyone who said “sounds great to me.” But of all the folks I’ve convinced to try it, several have liked it and the worst reaction has been “it’s better than I thought it would be, but not my favorite.” Of course you have to like all three ingredients to like the sandwich.

You might be able to substitute sweet pickle or salad dressing, but since I’m not a fan of either of those, I can’t say how it would be. Don’t want to risk a whole sandwich, just get you a teaspoon full of peanut butter, put some mayo and a little dill pickle slice on it and see what you think. Let me know if you try it.

I just noticed the date and this is not an April Fools joke, although I can see why you might think so. I ate and enjoyed every bite of the sammie on March 12 :).

  1. I am a big fan of peanut butter sandwiches myself. I have never added mayo to one though. My combo is PB, dill pickles, and onions, so I am not that far from yours, which I will try.

  2. Now don't you know I have never heard of this combination in all of my life! Maybe I'll get "brave" and give it a taste. I admit, until I got to the end of your post, I DID think it was an April Fool's joke!

  4. I grew up eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I have to admit that pickle, mayonnaise and peanut butter has never occurred to me but, I would be willing to try it.

    Cheers to you on Jif extra cruncy...That would be my favorite too.

  5. Peanut Butter is my all-time favorite food--and I eat creamy JIF brand. I grew up eating Peanut Butter and Mayo ---but never with pickles. I had peanut butter and banana too....

    My daddy would eat peanut butter on crackers and some pickles at nights before bedtime.

    Someday---I may try your concoction----but I'm still happy just with my pb and mayo!!!!!

  7. I can't even imagine what that would taste like. I will try it one of these days. I also think this version makes for a very difficult wine pairing. :-)
    I'm a purist when it comes to peanut butter sandwiches; Creamy Jiff, butter, white bread. Nope, don't even like jelly. As always great post Larry.
