French Dip Crescent Ring

Cindy said she had been wanting to make this for a while and finally had time to do it this week.  She used a recipe from Delish and followed it as written below.  This is a shot of theirs.

French Dip Crescent Ring

Ingredients:

3 tbsp. butter, divided

1/2 onion, thinly sliced

2 sprigs thyme, divided

kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

2 8-oz. tubes Crescent Rolls

1/3 c. Grainy mustard

1 lb. deli roast beef

8 slices provolone

2 egss, beaten with 1 tsp water for egg wash

1 tbsp. chopped parsley, plus more for garnish

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 Garlic clove, minced

1 c. beef stock

1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in onion and 1 thyme sprig. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to soften and turn slightly golden. Season with salt and pepper and reduce heat to medium. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized. Remove from heat.

3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll crescent rolls, separating each triangle. Arrange in a sunburst pattern, with pointed ends of the triangles facing outward (the base of the triangles should overlap).

4. Spread mustard on dough. Top with provolone, roast beef, and onions creating a ring at the base of the triangles.

5. Fold triangle tips over filling and tuck under base to secure.

6. In a small bowl, whisk egg. Brush top of dough with egg and sprinkle with parsley and garlic powder.

7. Bake until dough is golden and cheese has melted, 15-20 minutes.

8. Meanwhile, make au jus. Melt remaining butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant. Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce and thyme, stripped from stem. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes until reduced slightly. Pour into a small bowl and garnish with parsley.

9. Serve ring hot with the dipping sauce.

The Verdict:

Cindy's looked pretty much just like the one above and we all thought it was very good so I went looking for recipes for other rings to make.  I’m not sure why, but we rarely use crescent rolls for dishes but they always look so good on other blogs I read.

On the really good news front, Cindy and I got our first Covid-19 vaccine that morning so we have all had our first shot of Moderna and SIL, Pat, will soon get her second one – since she is 75, she got an earlier start - one of the very, very few advantages of being old.  We should all be fully protected by the end of March so I’m beginning to book some RV travel sites – yeah finally.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Larry, Cindy did a great job with this dish! It's simpler than it first sounds and it looks amazing when finished. Great looking deli roast beef too! Costco or Sam's? Somewhere else? I might do ours with jalapenos on one side and olives or mushrooms on the other side for Laurie. Congrats on the shots...We're 'scheduled' to get our first jabs on Monday. We're hopeful! 4. Where was Cindy around SuperBowl time? That would have been a fun recipe to make. Looks delicious. Fabulous about the vaccine. I'm still looking for an appointment. Seems our shipment got stuck in Tennessee due to the storm.

  6. That looks so scrumptious! Congrats on getting the vaccine. We got our first one last week, and the follow up is already scheduled. It's been a nightmare getting them in California. We feel like we won the lottery.
