Three Stop RV Rally – Days 11& 12 – Downtown Charleston, Harbor Cruise, and Pages

On Thursday, I drove the ladies downtown so they could shop at the HistoricCharleston City Market then I came back to the campground to check on the dogs and when I picked the ladies up later we drove to the Maritime Center for a harbor cruise on the CarolinaBelle.

It was basically a well narrated cruise out to Fort Sumter and back and along the way we learned about Charleston history, the homes along the water, the forts, the ships at Patriot Point, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge and several other items of interest.  Fort Sumter's walls  used to be about 30' taller.

This appeared to be a sailing class.

This guy must have failed the class.

After the cruise, we drove back down to the Angel Oak Restaurant to an empty dining room just so we could have beignets again.

But since we were there, we also ate: Steamed mussels ($12) then shrimp and grits ($17) for me,

Composed Oysters of the Day - Fried oysters, creamed spinach, bacon, parmesan ($12) and side salad for Bev,

Piggy Mac - Creamy mornay sauce over house smoked pulled pork, topped with house cured bacon ($14) for Pat,

and Crab Bisque ($5) and House Salad ($6) for Cindy (no pic), then we shared an order of beignets for dessert.

On Friday, the group drove over to Mt. Pleasant to eat lunch at Pages Okra Grill - you can probably tell from my posts for this trip that eating is one of the major activities for our group.

Our group of ten shrank to six as some folks had issues to deal with but those who went were glad they did.   While waiting for our table, we sat outside in the shade and had an adult beverage then at the table we ordered a starter of Pages Sampler Platter - House Pimiento Cheese, Redneck Rolls and Fried Green Tomatoes ($10) – for the table to share.

For our meals, Cindy ordered the Fried Sea Bass Sandwich ($14),

Pat had the Country fried Chicken with fried okra and mac & cheese,

Bev had the regular Fried Chicken (bone in) ($12),

and I had the Salmon Salad - Grilled Atlantic salmon fillet served over mixed greens with grilled asparagus, diced applewood smoked bacon, grape tomatoes, red onions, hard boiled eggs, crumbled blue cheese and croutons.  Served with our Chef’s vinaigrette.

The meals were topped off with some desserts - Pecan Pie for Pat and a huge piece of delicious peanut butter pie for Bev at the outrageous price of $4.

The meals were all very good, except Bev’s overcooked chicken and I thought my salad was excellent.  The salmon was very tasty and when ordered medium rare it was perfectly cooked for me and the salad with all those ingredients was delicious.

We’ve been to the Okra Grill each of our three trips to Charleston and have always thought it was the opposite of tourist food by getting large portions of very good food (other than Bev’s chicken) at a very reasonable price and as usual it was very busy.  It will continue to be a regular stop anytime we visit Charleston.

After lunch we drove Cindy to the airport as she had to go home for a job, then we stopped by camping world to get replacements for my falling apart windshield wipers so we’re set for tomorrows departure.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  3. "this guy must have failed the class...." Larry, you're a hoot! I love those little river cruises. Just enough water time, without enough time to get to feel cooped up and/or bored.

  4. I love that food is a big part of your traveling! It is for my family as well. It looks like the boat cruise was fun and neat to see all of those big ships.
