Three Stop RV Rally – Day 7&8 – Savannah Historic Area and 8th AF Museum

Warning - Lot's of photos.

Saturday was a pretty laid back day with lunch at the Pirate House being the major event.  The front part of the restaurant was established in 1753 and is in the oldest building in Georgia. A large brick addition was built in the mid 1900’s but the inside was built to match the old original part of the restaurant.

Several folks ordered from the menu but most of us went for the buffet ($14.95) and this is my plate.

I believe everyone enjoyed their meal and I thought this was very good buffet food – especially the fried catfish.

Later in the day, we met around the campfire and the vice president of the FMCA Eastern Region presented us with a certificate for the 15th anniversary of our chapters founding, which was followed by ice cream and cookies around the fire.

On Sunday many of the girls went to the nearby flea/farmers market and some outlets while I drove Cindy downtown so she attend mass at The Cathedral Of St. John The Baptist.

During the time of her service, I drove around and took some shots of the historic area.  These are some of the squares.

Around the squares is where the stately old homes stand on tree lined streets.

Then we drove back down to River St. where ballast rocks (used to weight the empty ships coming from Europe to pick up American goods) were used for roads, walls, and buildings.

Later, while the ladies shopped, four of us drove a few miles north to visit the 8th Air Force Museum which was formed in Savannah for WWII at what is now Hunter Army Airfield.

I thought the museum was first class and included static displays, videos, and narrated displays.  It included a full size B-17 bomber and a P-51 Mustang fighter which were two of the main planes America used against the Germans.

Photos can be enlarged by clicking on them and the blue words are links.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  4. Larry, Love a good buffet! Thanks for the tip. Coincidence...The Pirate House was in one of those internet lists today, as the oldest tavern in GA. We'll have to stop and visit the AF museum the next time we're down that way. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  5. I'd love to go to The Pirate House, except I can't be trusted around buffets. I eat too much. That cathedral looks amazing. And the sight-seeing photos you post make me want to visit.
