Southwestern RV Trip – Days 20 & 21 – Tucson. AZ

We spent our first full day getting to know some of our neighbors which is my favorite part of RVing.  One of the couples right beside us are full timers and we enjoyed spending a couple of hours chatting with them but unfortunately they were leaving the next day.  Then, while walking the dogs, Bev ran into a guy a few sites down who invited us down to watch the TN basketball game, which we did of course.  Turns out his fiancee is from Knoxville and he is from Cleveland, TN (we live between the two) and they are both contract nurses.  They have been here for a few years and live in the campground full time as it’s cheaper than renting an apartment.  This couple plus their neighbors make up a little community that operates like a family ranging in ages from 29 to around our age – I look forward to spending more time with them.

Here are some shots of the campground and around our site, #1609 (they start at 1300), including the grapefruit and lemon trees that line the back of the rigs.  The lemons are good but after the Ruby Reds we had we had in Texas, the grapefruits leave a lot to be desired.

So far I like the campground except for the noise.  We are near railroad tracks that seem to require the locomotives blowing their horns (at night of course) and we are between the Tucson airport and the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base so we get some plane noise.

For our second day in Tucson, we drove downtown, went to the store for some margarita fixins and cooked supper – I was ready for something other than restaurant meals and leftovers and I wanted to cook Pam’s Roasted Lemon Pepper HerbChicken Thighs With Lemon Pepper Wine Sauce.  Please check her site for the recipe and good shots of the dish.

We had a package of thighs from home and a lemon tree out back so it seemed like a natural so I followed Pam’s recipe except I didn’t have all of the herbs and spices and after flipping I reduced the heat to 240F, added a lid, and cooked it on the cook top.

I thought it was delicious and will make again with breasts to suit my girls - Thanks Pam for another of your delicious meals.

As I watch the weather and the extreme cold that is occurring up north, it’s easy to see why folks come here for the winter and enjoy the temps in the low 70’s.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Glad you are enjoying it there so far, lots to see and do. The winter weather here in the southwest is why we are here, it can be a bit noisy there, thats why we prefer, the isolation of the desert.

  2. Yay! So glad you liked it. I bet the sauce will be delicious with chicken breasts too. It's so great you were able to pick a lemon fresh from the tree!

  3. Larry, Great looking chicken dish! Nothing like dark meat for flavor. I'll bet that those covered slots are the only thing that keeps that RV spot going in the summer! I can't imagine 110 degrees in an RV, even with air conditioning. Has to be the slow time for them... Take Care, Dave
