2018 Summer RV Trip – Days 28 & 29 –Two Rivers Area

The campground is located a couple of miles north of Two Rivers, WI a town of 11,000+ that serves the local area with only a couple of tourists stops - being the birthplace of the ice cream sundae is their major claim to fame.  They have a very nice public beach area, several marinas and the name comes from the East and West Twin Rivers that run thru town and join just inland from Lake Michigan.




This is the old fishing village.



We decided Friday would be dairy day – we are in Wisconsin after all – and we began the day with breakfast on the south side of town at the Lighthouse Inn.  The restaurant wall is just a few feet from the lake and this is a shot from my seat.



We were there late and had the place pretty much to ourselves but as you can see on the left, it is raised so that those customers also get a good lake view.



Bev and Pat split a breakfast sandwich and each got an order of hash browns and I had a Greek Omelet and we all thought our meals were good as was the service.  Pat told the server these may have been her best hash browns ever.




From there we drove a few miles to Pine River Dairy which turned out to be a butter producer and while they may have been at one time, they are not actually a dairy as they buy all of their milk from other farmers - we bought a few pounds of butter as it will freeze well if necessary.  They also sell many dairy products from other producers but the one thing I would have loved to buy but they didn’t sell was their waste product – real buttermilk.


We drove a little further to the southwest thru the pretty, rolling farmland with mostly corn and soybeans and what we think was alfalfa, past a big Lutheran Church out in the middle of nowhere to arrive at Henning’s Cheese Factory, which is a decent sized operation.






They had already made their cheese run for the day, but we’ve seen it done at our local Sweetwater Valley Farms.  Where SVF makes some cheddar, most of their flavored cheeses are jack cheese while Henning’s are mostly cheddar.  We tasted several and really liked the Chipotle Cheddar, so we bought three pounds of it plus a couple of others.  We’d like to load up everywhere we go but we have limited fridge and freezer space.

On Saturday, the ladies went to the very meager farmers market and shopped around some in Two Rivers and after I picked them up they decided to stop at Family Dollar.  While I waited in the car with the dogs, I noticed there was a steady stream of traffic and could only deduce that it was the local Walmart equivalent as the nearest real one is about 30minutes away in Manitowoc.  We know because we made a stop there to get my glasses repaired and refill a Bev prescription – the ability to do that across the country is one of the few things I like about Walmart.

That evening we grilled a pre-marinated pork tenderloin for the girls and two walleye fillets in foil with wine, butter, and lemon pepper for me.  The tenderloin turned out good after I washed off the sand from dropping it and I liked the taste of the fish but not the lemon pepper.  Better luck next time for both of them.

  4. The breakfasts both look mighty tasty. Chipotle cheddar sounds like a good choice to buy - yum! I love stopping off at the Tillamook Cheese Factory here in Oregon.
