2018 Summer RV Trip – Days 16 & 17 – Moving On & Mackinaw Area

A/C Update – Saturday was our first hot day and, while it got into the high 70’s at the front of the coach, we made it fine on the 91 degree day and it helped that it got a little cloudy late afternoon.  Using the portable fan to blow cool air into the bedroom worked well and while we usually have the bedroom cooler, I still slept under the covers.  It’s good to know we can survive a day in the 90’s as I think we may see more on our way back south.

Sunday was moving day and our 120 mile driving route was pretty simple – MI-22 back the Traverse City, US-31 to I-75 for one exit, then US-23 to the campground.  Except for a few repaired sections, US-31 was in bad shape and the coach rattle most of the way over here.

We pulled into Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping located a couple of miles south of Mackinaw City on US-23.  The 200 acre campground has over 600 sites and around 100 cabins and sits on the shore of Lake Huron, which we had never before seen.  In spite of the large number of folks checking in, the 6-7 folks running the process made it very quick and easy.

Even though the place is very big, the shrubs between sites makes it not seem so and each site feels pretty private.  This is our site, #779, and the road we are on.  

There are no sites directly on the water but rather a common use area with fire pits then a road, then campsites, thereby making the lake shore available to all campers.  

I got the sunset shot of the Mackinac Bridge from there on our first night and the one just above during the day.  To eliminate the confusion, Mackinaw (English) and Mackinac (French) are both pronounced mack-in-all.

Our first morning, we decided to go out for breakfast to a place with good reviews and fish on the menu – one of my goals is to try lots of lake fish.  We went to Audies Restaurant located a couple of blocks from downtown.  I ordered the Fisherman’s Catch which had broiled White Fish, hash browns, eggs and toast for $11, Bev had the Hunters which was same as mine but with a smoked pork chop, and Pat had the Farmer Omelet stuffed with ham, potatoes, onion, peppers, and cheese.

All of the meals were good but I thought the fish was over cooked and a little dry.  As you can see, Pat’s omelet was huge and stuffed full – I’ll get it if I go back.  The small container of red stuff on each plate was their delicious homemade strawberry jam.

It was a rainy day so we hung around the coach for the afternoon doing laundry and a few chores then we had a meatloaf sandwich for supper - leftover from last night’s meal for – our favorite use of meatloaf.
