Our
Tennessee Travelers Chapter of FMCA (motorhome club) recently had a little summer get-together
for a lunch cruise aboard the Star Of Knoxville riverboat - a 325 passenger paddle wheeler. The boat headed downriver from downtown
Knoxville for a two hour round trip cruise.
This is the docking area with the boat behind it, then out on the river.
Here
are some shots of the dining area which included a DJ and a dance floor. The buffet included salad, rolls, corn, green
beans, mashed potatoes, and chicken and it was actually pretty good – better than
I expected. Here are some inside shots.
The
upper deck is open air and covered making it a pleasant ride in spite of the 90
degree temps. The upper level includes a
cash bar and view of the paddle wheels.
This
is a real strern-wheeler with the paddles being the only means of movement –
some of these boats have propellers with the paddle wheel for show. This one has a diesel engine that powers
hydraulic pumps that run hydraulic motors connected to the two independently
turning paddles.
We
rode past one of Knoxville's exclusive neighborhoods – Sequoya Hills – which contains
some nice homes on the lake then just prior to docking we past Calhoun’s On The
River (restaurant).
It
was a nice way for a group to get together for a meal and a visit but I thought
the ride should have been a little longer and the boat could use a little sprucing
up and better cleaning.

ReplyDeleteWe took the kids on the afternoon cruise (no meal) probably 25 years ago. It was a nice ride; slow and leisurely, but not too long for little guys. It probably would have been too short if we had had a meal included.
ReplyDeleteLarry, Apparently the cruise worked out OK for your group. Good news about the food as too frequently these kinds of meal cruises lack in the food department. I have a dinner cruise coming up on the General Jackson in Nashville about mid-October and I'm a bit dubious re: the food and the cruise. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

The riverboat sounds like a great relaxing lunch.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad the boat ride was too short but it still looks like it was a fun adventure.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd skip the meal and stay on the covered, open-air top deck at all times. I hope they will take a clue from you and clean it up and spruce it up a bit because it seems like a lovely activity.
