2015 Western Trip – Day 30 – FM and Deception Pass

On Sat morning, the ladies went to the local farmers market (one of their favorite things to do) and came back with mostly baked goods (one of their favorite things to buy).  Later in the day, we took the 4pm boat tour of Deception Pass traveling with Deception Pass Tours.

But first we got a few shots from up on the bridge – note the smoke is still with us.

Depending on the tides the narrow waterway through Deception Pass can move at nine mph moving a giant amount of water.  The pass is between Fildago and Whidbey Islands and connects Skagit Bay (part of Puget Sound) with the Strait of Juan de Fuca (which heads out to the Pacific).

Once we got on the boat we drove slowly under the bridge and got a little history of it.

The bridge, really two bridges, was completed in 1935 for a cost of $482,000 and only took 11 months to build (probably three years today).  The construction cost was less than that to repaint them in 1983.

After leaving the bridges, we headed out to open water in hopes of seeing some whales and we did see a couple of small ones and I happened to have my camera pointed at the right time.

Mostly we just saw sea birds and one seal and a cargo plane from the nearby Naval Air Station.

We did decide this satisfied our whale watching trip desires though.

Photos can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. Too bad all the smoke still there, at least it satisfied your craving.

  2. Even with the smoke, it looked like a fun trip and it did what it was supposed to do- took another thing off of the to-go list.

  3. It's a bummer it was so smokey for you guys. The boat trip sounds like fun & I love that you were able to spot a few small whales.

  4. We have been to Anacortes but have not explored that Deception Pass area; it should be on our list of to-do's. :)
Regardless of the air quality, the photos have a nice sepia tone about them.
    Hi to the ladies.
