Also love to visit small non-chain restaurants. They all seem to be struggling these days. It is a tough economy. Great advice - have a wonderful weekend Bev and Larry!
ReplyDeleteI so agree. In fact we found a family owned restaurant yesterday that is now our go to for breakfast.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a semi-rural town, we breakfast at a tiny place the food lovely, the owners even nicer, it pays for their grandchildren they are raising and for others they help here...the big stores we avoid except the grocery store my hubs retired from, if we don't shop there the people will not get their hours of employment and everyone loses, plus if we don't shop there the union pension we have will be gone sooner than later, a win win situation..ciao have a wonderful weekend and week coming up!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteThat is so true Larry. Lake Lure is a small town. I try it fight the urge to run into Asheville or Hendersonville to shop. There are some fine small stores right near me and I try to buy local as much as possible.

ReplyDeleteIt hurts me to see the big box stores continually squeeze out the small business folks. I have my few 'mom-pop" stores that I spend much of my money with, as these are the same customers walking into our store, I have yet to see that CEO, or it's employees for that matter, passing the money back to me.

Since I grew up in a small town, it hurts me to see the little Mom-Pop businesses have to close up once the big chains (like Walmart and Dairy Queen and MacDonalds, etc.) got there.... That has happened all over the country ---and the big companies just keep getting bigger and bigger. I was surprised recently to hear that one of the best local hospitals in Nashville (Baptist) --has now merged with a 'big corporation' --St. Thomas.... Pretty soon, St. Thomas will be the only hospital in the city and there will be no competition... We the people are the ones who will suffer... Oh Well.
