2013 Western Trip – Onward to Durango

As of Oct. 2, we are back at Almost Heaven South and the 5300 mile trip is in the books, but I will continue to post our adventures, in order, unless something important happens around here.

After a night in Cortez, CO, we made the 46 mile drive over to Durango for six nights at Alpen Rose RV Park.

We stayed here based upon the good web reviews and a couple of personal recommendations.  We arrived at the height of the CO rains and flooding at the campground was impacted by them.  I was disappointed in many things from the pot hole filled entry road to a site that was so un-level, our right rear tires were off the ground.  I liked the shade trees but when they blocked our satellite antenna, I was disappointed with the 12 channel cable network.

After 67 years, I’ve learned to try and adapt and still enjoy the day and I’m not whining about the campground but rather comparing what I found to what I expected to find - it would be a nice $30/night park.

However, since I had already put off my birthday dinner for a day, I was not going to let a little water stop me from firing up the new Weber Jumbo Joe  charcoal grill during a break in the rain.

After an appetizer of good fresh bread dipped in seasoned olive oil, we used the grill to bake potatoes, grill chicken for the girls and a rib eye for me.

The entire meal was delicious and shortly after we finished eating, it began to rain again – Mother Nature was being kind to me.  It rained most of the night and the next morning the water level was still higher.

As Clint Eastwood said in Heartbreak Ridge, we must “improvise, adapt, and overcome.”

A few nights later another storm passed by and this was the front of our coach - even deeper this time.

That night, I got out of bed about 10pm, donned a strap-on headlight and my shower shoes, and carried each dog over to that grassy area for their nightly potty break - think America's Funniest Home Videos.

Photos best if enlarged by clicking on them.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. First of all, happy birthday. Now I'm trying to imagine you carrying the dogies over the flood waters to higher ground for their business. Yep, funny video.

To me, there's no place like home. Welcome back and so glad your trip was safe.

  2. Happy Birthday. We had that kind of water when we were in Florida and a hurricane dumped on us. Jim put on his boots and carried the girls also. I find we can tolerate just about any campground as long as we're level or easily leveled. Being off the ground would really bother me.

  3. Larry, At my age, every birthday is a definite win! I like your positive 'will make do' attitude... I'd pay money for a video of you in your shorts and t-shirt with a strap on headlight in flip flops carrying the dogs for their potty breaks. It would have gone viral on the Internet! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  4. Good Lord! You weren't kidding when you said your RV looked like a bus in a lake! It's a good thing the dogs had you to haul them through it to the safe potty zone! Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday, Larry; glad you got to enjoy your grill.
