I ran this last year but decided I'd do a rerun especially after talking with our recently returned from Afghanistan son, Rhett. His description - just try to perceive the world as described a few of thousand years ago in the Bible and that's where I've been.
Just think how important it is for us that 235 years ago, a group of very brave people said we’re not willing to put up with this anymore and we are declaring our independence from Great Britain. They were willing to fight and die for their beliefs and their freedom. I think too many people view this merely as another holiday called the 4th – let’s have a cook out for the 4th or what are you doing on the 4th are frequently heard. I’ve recently quit calling it the 4th and using Independence Day to make sure I remember the significance of the day – even though I recently read that it may not be the right day - link (who cares). While I often get frustrated with our government and our politics, I merely have to look around Almost Heaven South or reflect a few minutes about the Middle East, Somalia, Myanmar, North Korea and many other places where people suffer under dictatorships or anacrhy, or live in abject poverty, to make me very thankful to those brave souls of 1776.
So let's all enjoy our Independence Day weekend and more importantly our independence and thanks for stopping by.

I'm almsost finshed with a book called...Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow. I'll let you read it if you'd like. Truly opens ones eyes, as to what our founding father's did to bring the United States of America to life! We so owe to each of them, all the freedom & liberties we so enjoy today. If not for their bravery & wisdom, life as we know it, would be very, very different.

Here, here! I also call it Independence Day. This holiday is fun with the parades and fireworks, but it's just not complete without hearing the Star Spangled Banner while viewing our flag. (makes me cry)

ReplyDeleteExcellent post, Larry... I wrote one this morning on FREEDOM. One of my commenters from another country said that we Americans do not understand the freedom we truly have until we live in a 3rd world country --where they do not have it. We truly here in the USA are spoiled --and do not appreciate our freedom....
