A Hearty Breakfast For The Man Of The House

I needed to start the day with a good breakfast to bolster myself for a hard day of errand running with Bev and her sister, so I commenced to pondering. Let me think – I have some fresh homemade sausage, I have some formed cornmeal mush, I have eggs – it’s a no brainer.

I didn't actually eat it like shown, but after the photo, I slid the mush under the eggs, broke the yolks and spread them around and dug in to some good eats - washed it down with a glass of homemade mater juice with some fresh ground pepper and a squeeze of lemon.  I think I'm ready for the challenge now.

I know many folks put syrup on their fried mush/polenta but we just never did – I even went through a phase where I added no syrup to pancakes – butter only. I suppose all families have their food quirks, but there were two things we always ate open faced on a slice of buttered white bread – fried green tomatoes and fried mush – yep, it was an open-faced bread on bread sandwich. One other family funny, my Grandfather didn’t have fried mush, but rather fried mersh and our nation’s capitol was Warshington, DC, and of course the entire family warshed their cloths.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

Larry

  1. My dad quite often would say, "I wush you wuld hersh up!" I always was a smartmouth. When he got angry his childhood dialect definitely came out! I am from WV and have travelled quite a bit. When I went north to Pensylvania (not tha far) and Michigan I would ridiculed for my "southern" accent. When I went south to the Carolinas, I would get ridiculed for my Northern accent. Just sayin'........

  2. You'll need your strength to run errands with the ladies Larry. Meakin is a good sport and does the same for me. If I start spending too much money, he all of a sudden announcers he has a stomach ache and declares we're going home. He swears it's the truth, but somehow I don't buy the story. You wouldn't do that would you?

We love fried cornmeal mush and a fried egg running over it sounds delicious to me. Please pass me a glass of your homemade mater juice.

  3. That looks like it would totally hold up to lady shopping.

  4. I'm back to defend my husband's honor. He swears he's never faked a stomach ache while shopping with the ladies. However, he often borrows one of Minnie Pearl's favorite phrases - "We're through playing now" and heads for the car.

  6. We worshed our clothes. Also, Dinner was our noon time meal and supper was in the evening. Now that I'm in Denver, it took me years, but one day I realized I wash my clothes and dinner is in the evening.

  9. Larry, Nice Breakfast!! Sausage, eggs and corn meal mush. However, I am one of those folks that would put butter & syrup on the mush. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  10. Our food never looks pretty once we start eating it. What good is it if you can't mix it just the way you like, after all?

And I had a grandfather who would visit Warshington DC, and who always yelled at us to warsh our hands. And he came from Connecticut, not WV, so....maybe it's a generational thing?

  11. I love a fried egg on half of an English muffin, cooked just enough to make it runny and soppable with the bread. Soppable is a word isn't it? Glad you had the strength to endure shopping. To me, I could go all day. Yeah Bev!

  12. I think having fried mersh for breakfast is a good idear. When I lived in NC, I heard more r's being added to many words in which they did not belong. But coming from Boston, we don't even say our ah's! A real hearty breakfast for sure!

  13. No egg is safe around you, is it? Heh heh.

Warsh the car reminds me of my best friend growing up, he used to put on a funny faked Boston access.
