For the second meal as part of Kathy’s Christmas present, we decided to go to the local Greenback Diner where we had not been in many years. After we retired, we ate two to three times per week at the locally famous Greenback Drug Store which at one time was a drugstore with a pharmacist and they served meals as well. It was where the local farmers gathered early every morning for coffee and solving the world's problems and they occasionally brought their instruments and played a little music and politicians would come by stumping for votes. After the original owners sold, it changed hands several times, the food quality and service went down hill and we gradually quit going. Even though it’s only a 10 minute drive, we haven’t been in more than 10 years so when Kathy suggested it, we decided to give it a try.
We got there at 11:30 and they were already pretty busy - our waitress advised it was due to it being meatloaf day.
When we used to go, they only served food that could be cooked on a flattop or in a deep fryer but one of the later owners remodeled the pharmacy area into a kitchen so they now serve many more items including daily special plate lunches. Texas girl Kathy opted for Chicken Fried Steak with fried okra and slaw.
Bev had a large cheeseburger with fries.
And I had the daily special meatloaf with mashed potatoes and collard greens.
The Verdict:
Bev was disappointed in the flavor of both the burger and
the fries and would not order either of them again. Kathy and I both enjoyed our meals and would
order them again. Kathy's meat was tasty, crispy
and the gravy was very good. My meat had
a good flavor and a looser texture (which I like) than is often found with
restaurant meatloaf. Both of my sides were
also very good as were Kathy’s. We won’t
wait several years before going again and they advised that they are open for supper
four evenings a week.

Love the description of the diner before it was remodeled. And I hope they still have the flattop. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, the best burgers come off a flat top grill. I don't think Bev's burger looks very good. The American cheese isn't even melty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lea Ann - Bev's burger did not look appealing at all. You know I don't eat cheese but even to me that cheese looked slapped on at the last minute and that's not right. Give me the chicken fried steak.
ReplyDeleteI have a sudden craving for chicken fried steak and collard greens. All of the lunches look tasty, but it's a bummer Bev's was a disappointment.
