The Greenbrier Hotel And Resort Part 2

We began the next day with breakfast in the Greenbrier's very elegant main dining room which had a buffet.

We opted to order from the menu where the girls had a very decadent Bananas Foster French Toast and Steve and I just had eggs and meat.

Then we took the famous once secret bunker tour which was built to house congress in case of nuclear war but since the CSX railroad now leases much of the bunker and uses it for data storage, we couldn’t take any photos but you can see many here.

After the tour, we ate lunch at resorts Drapers CafĂ© where I had an awesome fried green tomato sandwich and the best ever sweet potato fries.  Meal prices at the Greenbrier were about double those of a normal nice restaurant - $24 hamburger and fries.

Then the ladies had a two hour spa treatment and Steve and I lounged around the nearly empty at mid-afternoon Slamin Sammy’s Sports Bar and shot a game of pool – wow I am terrible at it.

We had supper at Sam Snead’s at the golf center (same building as Slammin Sammy's) where our meal was significantly delayed due to a kitchen fan problem and none of our meals were very good.  Bev and Pat had loaded baked potatoes which were not fresh and Steve and I had the way over cooked trout - wouldn’t eat there again.

Photos can be slightly enlarged by clicking on them and the blue words are links.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. That banana foster breakfast is a very clever idea. And I'm truly surprised that a high end place like that would go ahead and serve you a meal when kitchen problems were obviously going to compromise quality. That's a shame. But nonetheless what a great overall experience.

  2. Cindy Lou here…. Oh! how delicious that fried green tomato sandwich & sweet potato fries look …. Larry, you ordered the meal I would’ve ordered. I’ll have to try making these when I’m able to move around a little better.
    And….what a beautiful restaurant.

  3. The French toast definitely got my attention. It looks scrumptious. I agree with Lea Ann - I can't believe they continued to serve with problems in the kitchen.

  4. I've driven BY the Greenbriar on the way to a poorman's education conference back in the 90s when I taught at U.T....never been inside though. Looks magnificent. So does the food. Banana's Foster French Toast had to be to die for!

  6. The main dining room looks pretty fancy and your breakfasts look tasty. It's too bad the dinner wasn't up to par! Ugh.
