Furniture Shopping in north Georgia

As I mentioned in a previous post, about the new flooring, Bev is now on a quest to replace the 1950’s tables and lamps, that we got from her parents, with something she actually wants – in other words to decorate the living room vs. having an eclectic collection of items.

While on an RV rally a year or so ago, she saw some rustic pieces she liked at Alexander’s Store near Blairsville, GA.  So, Pat, Cindy, Bev and I loaded up at 9am for the 2hr+ into north Georgia. Alexander's reminds me of Mast General Store with some of everything except groceries, but since Mast began in 1883, I’m pretty sure it did not copy Alexander’s, which opened in 1953.

Alexander’s is located about 8 miles from Blairsville and pretty much in the middle of nowhere as this shot from their parking lot shows – hard to believe they’ve been in business for 66 years, but several of the cars in the lot had Florida tags.

Here are some shots of the inside taken in just one direction of each room so it is nearly twice as big as my pics show.

After Bev shopped around and decided what she was interested in, we decided to go to lunch to discuss it and we opted for Blairsville’s top ranked restaurant – Nani’s Restaurant - for Cuban fare.

After looking over the menu, we all opted for a large Cuban sandwich ($6.99) and I ordered a bowl of chick pea soup for us to try.

Everything was good but we thought the sandwich could use more meat and was not up to our local Aroma Café, where the staff is all from Cuba and they make a great sandwich.

We then had a communication snafu and decided to drive over to Blue Ridge, Ga, which was on our way home, to stop at another furniture store and while we were there, we went to Mercier Orchards to check it out, and pick up some apples and fried pies.

Then the communication snafu came into play as Bev actually had planned to go back to Alexander’s to make some final decisions, get the real prices, and buy a small table to bring home and see how she liked it, so we made the 30 mile return drive.  She is looking at very rustic stuff for our place as reflected in this shot.

It’s not what I would buy, but it’s a decorating decision (makes it hers) and I will be fine with whatever she chooses as long as it meets our functional needs.

It was after 7pm when we got home and we were all pretty much done-in, but we enjoyed our day in the north Georgia mountains and the pretty scenery.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  2. Larry, This was one heck of a single day road trip! Its pretty much the way we roll... We still haven't tried Aroma Cafe. I'll have to check out their menu as we aren't big on Cuban sandwiches...and we've tried a few even in Florida. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  3. I've only had one cuban sandwich and that was at a sketchy place in Miami a very long time ago. I wan't impressed. So did Bev get that piece of furniture in the last photo? I like it.

  4. I love Cubano sandwiches and the meat should always be the star. It looks like you had a fun day together.
