2013 Western Trip – Heading to Yellowstone

We pulled out of Kalispell, MT for the 360 mile drive down to Island Park, ID (about 30 minutes from the West Yellowstone Entrance).  Check out the Wikipedia link to learn about Island Parks 30 mile long by 500' wide main street.  The trip began along the eastern shore of Flathead Lake and past the now fruitless cherry orchards.

It was typical Montana scenery until we turned south off of I-90 and began driving along the Madison River first through a gorge and then through the Madison Valley.

This area where ID, MT, and WY meet is renowned for its fly fishing and many folks were standing in the river.

It took us eight hours to make the drive and we arrived at Red Rock RV Park & Campground in the late afternoon.  The address is Island Park, but it’s actually 5 miles west of the main road (US-20) toward the hills and is surrounded by scrubby pasture and a forested hillside.

We had a pretty good campsite and totally filled it with the coach, but we had a nice yard between us and the neighbors.

The place has a great area for the dogs with a long lighted walk around the large fenced-in area.

The owners were very friendly and helpful, providing plenty of non-park things to see and do around the area.  Other than the 30 minute drive to a real town (West Yellowstone) and the park entrance, which Bev and Pat whined about for at least 30 minutes, it was a good location and near many other activities.

Photos best if enlarged by clicking on them.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  6. Larry, I hope that they told you about the Grizzly Bear encounter just outside the park on US 89...over the MT line. It is very cool! Fascinating to see the bears forage for food. Definitely worth the drive... Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  8. We stayed with friends in Island Park several years ago. Meakin caught a bunch of small trout in the pretty stream in their back yard. Lovely area. I look forward to your photos of Yellowstone. Seeing buffalos just roaming around was fascinating to me. There are lots of great spots for a picnic in Yellowstone.
