Thanksgiving 2012 At Almost Heaven South

As you may have gathered by now, I was alone on Thanksgiving Day and had several meal options from which to choose, starting with a grilled cheese sandwich by myself through an invitation to dinner in Oak Ridge with Wende (daughter) and her friends up to driving to Baltimore for the holiday with Eric (son).

After the previous week’s seafood meal, I decided to invite my buddy Joe and his wife Carol down for a repeat.  Carol opted for something else but Joe decided to come on down.

We considered what we liked about the last meal and made this one just a little differently.  Since we also planned to winterize the RV, we spread the meal over the entire afternoon beginning with the shrimp cocktail appetizer.

Tell your friends not to order this at Almost Heaven South unless they want some shrimp.  Once again I used Ina’s cocktail sauce.  After the RV job, we had the salad course which consisted of a basic salad with bottled dressing and a half dozen raw oysters.  Similar to chicken on a salad but just a little different J

An hour and a half later we had the main course of grilled shrimp, grilled oysters, clams casino, and a baked sweet potato – we had to have something that made it Thanksgiving dinner in the South.

And finally, another hour or so later, we had Mrs. Smiths pumpkin pie with Ready Whip - not exactly mom's famous pumpkin pie with real whipped cream, but it was edible.

I know I won’t be able to talk Bev out of it, but after this meal, I’d opt to pass on turkey from now on – like last week’s flattened tower, this meal was just too good and as a bonus, it was easy to fix and clean up after.  Also, taking all afternoon to eat it negated the terrible stuffed feeling I have following the normal meal (I know, just eat less, but I can’t help myself).  I'll suggest we have an extended meal next year, even if we serve the traditional menu.

As you can likely guess, I won't be posting any Thanksgiving leftover meals - I ate the few leftover boiled shrimp out of the plastic bag they were stored in the next day for lunch J

I'm now responding to your comments and hoping you will stop back by - photos best if enlarged by clicking on them.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

Larry

  1. You just created a healthy Thanksgiving meal and very little cleanup. What's not to like about that? We do what we have to do and it looks like you did it in "high style." Bev & Mrs. Joe don't know what they missed.

  3. Looks like an OK meal to me! Where do your oysters come from. We just enjoyed some oysters in a restaurant here in Lakeland....1 dozen for $7.99 Thought that was a great deal and they were wonderful. They came from the gulf coast in Texas. Today heading to Tampa to buy some to bring home. ;)

    1. Susan - I don't where the oysters come from, but your $7.99/doz in a restaurant (opened with sauce, lemon, and crackers) is way better than my $8.99/doz whole, in a plastic bag from the market. The first time I ate them at an oyster bar in Venice, Fl they were 10 cents each.

    1. Thanks Jenn - similar meals must become more regular around here - I'm too old to wait for special occasions.

  5. That shrimp cocktail looks so nice on those Polish pottery plates. And with that little slice of lemon....

I refused to eat turkey dinner in the nursing home dining room, so we ran out and all we could find open was a Braums. It was bacon cheeseburgers for our Thanksgiving dinner.

    1. Thanks Lea Ann - After seeing the shots, I wish I'd added two more shrimp to each cocktail - thanks for noticing the lemon touch. Too bad about your choice of meals but good you got to spend the time with your mom.

  8. Awww, hate it that you and Bev were apart for Thanksgiving this year. But it looks like you and Joe enjoyed the repeat very much! Did you manage to get the work on the RV done with all that eating going on?

    1. We made sure to only eat the shrimp cocktail and drink one margarita prior to the RV work - then we made up for it.

  9. Our friend Greg always brings pounds and pounds of Shrimp for Thanksgiving snacking midafternoon. I'm sure you're shocked to learn there were none left. No? Well, you've got our number, then. Of course, our presentation isn't as pretty as yours.

thanksgiving leftovers? Do you mean the lunches and dinner the following day? That's right. 47 pounds of turkey, all gone by midnight Friday.

    1. Hi Betsy - Sounds like you and Bev (and most others) are like minded when it comes to Thanksgiving menus.

  11. Larry, Too bad that we weren't in town for Thanksgiving. Of course then you would have missed the eclectic dinner that you and Joe enjoyed together. You were sure thinking outside the box on that one! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  13. You have certainly been on a seafood kick and I am loving it! I really like how you spaced it how and made it all look so elegant, especially for two dudes - lol!

I meant to comment on your previous post with the char-grilled oysters...aren't they amazing? Oysters are one thing I really miss being up here and I really miss the days when we would invite everyone over and I couldn't grill them fast enough!

  14. Those shrimp and oysters look fab and I would prefer them to turkey any day! And so much better than a grilled cheese sandwich! :)

  15. I think you have something there Larry. I wonder what my family would think if I pulled those casseroles out of the oven one at a time? It is a nice idea but don't think it would fly without a bunch of whining. Ha ha. Glad you enjoyed your holiday!

    1. Tricia - It's a little harder to break down a Thanksgiving meal into parts, but I'll try to sell it as all thise casseroles being small plate meals.

  16. If I could eat shellfish, I'd devour every morsel of your Thanksgiving meal! We had a Mrs. Smith's pumpkin pie too . . . really simplifying things this year and it was wonderful!

    1. I'd hate it if I couldn't eat shellfish, but I know many folks are allergic to it.
