A Busy Saturday

For those of you lucky enough to still be working, Saturday is a special day, but for us retired types, it’s just another day (every day is Saturday) :-).  For us, this Saturday was a pretty busy day starting with a trip to the garden to harvest tomatoes.
Notice the absence of lower foliage that was removed due to blight.  About half of the red ones were ripe enough to harvest.  We ended up with 25 quarts – canned 21 and put 4 in the fridge to can with the next run in a few days.
Bev washed the dishes while I finished the canning and she built this stack to dry – which didn’t include the canner.  I think we had every big bowl we own is service.
Then we had 3 dinner guests to help eat the tri tip roast I’d been wanting to cook.  I used the process I’d used before and cooked it a little more done than I like because 3 of the others prefer it that way – but it was still very good.
We sided it with chunked fried green tomatoes, fried okra, and sliced tomatoes.

Here’s my plate.
It was all good and we finished the day with a trip to the dock to visit - it was a busy but very pleasant day.

All photos can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by Almost Heaven South.

  1. We'd do the dishes just to share that meal Larry. When Meakin's grandfather cooked, every dish in the kitchen was dirty by the time he finished. We would say, "looks like Gramps has been in the kitchen" when our sink looked like yours.

I know from experience that your mater juice is mighty fine.

  3. This looks great! I'm jealous of your awesome tomato plants. I only have three on my balcony and have only had about 3 tiny little cherry tomatoes ready to pick so far... One day, one day... when all of MY days are Saturdays....

  4. Wow, all those beautiful jars of tomatoes are just awesome! You should feel very good about your day's work. I had to laugh (just a little bit) at that stack of pots and pans. I can't make a sandwich without ending up with a counter full of dishes to wash.

  8. You have a very impressive tomato crop. I never grow more than we can eat, but of course I feed a few more people than you do.

    Your dinner looked splendid!

  10. Oh my gosh, look at all of those tomatoes! I'm so impressed by how many jars you were able to can. It will be a fine winter of recipes with those :)

  11. My dad, rip, did work harder in his garden every weekend then through retirement with his favorite hobby, gardening. The rewards are beyond words. I love those plants, you did a fabulous job keeping them healthy, no easy chore. I have tomatoes and herbs. My peppers didnt do anything but bloom which was dissappointing. I take all the tips I can get.. compost didnt help either... maybe next year.. Congrats on the great looking well groomed garden, blessings to you and yours.

  13. The peppers in the header pic look excellent. I'm sure I'll read about them as I play my weekly catch up:)

Jealous of the tri-tip, I have yet to get my hands on one and I don't want to buy half a cow just to get one. I'm with you, I like mine more rare but when my dad visits, he likes it more done. Ahhh the sacrifices we make for loved ones, ha ha.
